OUR STORY

A Beacon of Hope for Abandoned, Neglected, and At-Risk Pets

**Founding and Early Days:**

Sandite Team Animal Rescue (STAR) was born from a powerful vision in the small town of Sand Springs, Oklahoma. In 2011, a group of dedicated animal lovers, led by Lisa Riggs and Tammy Ervin, noticed a troubling rise in stray and abandoned pets. The local shelter was constantly full with the growing number of homeless animals. Driven by compassion, Lisa and Tammy, along with other like-minded individuals, formed STAR, a non-profit organization focused on rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in the Sand Springs area.

**Overcoming Challenges:**

The early days were filled with challenges. Resources were limited, and the need was overwhelming. Yet, the unwavering determination of STAR's founders and Board Members, combined with the support of the Sand Springs community, helped overcome these obstacles. Local businesses donated supplies, and families offered their homes as foster spaces for rescued animals, laying the foundation for STAR's mission.

**Innovative Approaches and Expansion:**

STAR introduced innovative rescue methods, including supporting the local shelter, Sand Springs Animal Welfare (SSAW), and transporting adoptable pets to locations with higher demand. They organized pet adoption events and created community awareness campaigns about responsible pet ownership. By partnering with local veterinary clinics, STAR covered medical costs and secured health certifications for pets, facilitating their transport to rescues in other states. By 2015, STAR had successfully rehomed hundreds of neglected and abandoned pets, giving them a chance at a happier life.

**Present and Future Vision:**

Today, STAR remains a beacon of hope for the dogs and cats of Sand Springs. With a dedicated team of volunteers, a robust adoption program, and ongoing community support, STAR continues to save lives and bring joy to countless families. Looking ahead, STAR aims to expand its reach, advocate for animal welfare on a larger scale, and inspire similar movements in neighboring communities. They are committed to increasing awareness about the overpopulation of homeless pets and supporting spay/neuter programs to create lasting change.
